Mike Guest: Photographer and Jazz Fan

Recently a photographer, Mike Guest, took some great pictures of Straight No Chaser at The Hassocks.  He had some very nice things to say about us, so I thought I would give them a shout out!

x

Primarily I am a professional photographer although in recent years I

have come to embrace graphic design and website construction to help
pay the bills. I love photography and, more importantly, have been a
‘Jazzer’ since my teens back in the late fifties.

Although bought up on Bebop and Hardbop I have tried to follow the
precarious progres
s of my ‘favourite’ music over the years, it has always been fun although sometimes a bit scary, vis-à-vis ‘Avant-garde’ and Free Jazz, both of which have left me with more questions than answers. Overall, I suppose, I gravitate back towards the music of my formative years and this naturally includes a hefty dose of material from the Big Band/Swing era, what a fantastic and seminal period that was.

SNC is ticking all the boxes for me, you have a fine group of
dedicated and enthusiastic musicians as evidenced by the sense of joy
and fun that exudes when you play. You
really have got it right and I

wish you a long and successful career in the years ahead.  From now on
I shall be keeping a close eye on your movements so I can get my fix
as often as possible!!

In return for using my photos it would be nice to get a photo credit
somewhere, however if this doesn’t fit in with your ethos then I fully
understand. And finally I would like to lay a proposition before you,
namely to give me access to the band – perhaps at rehearsals from time
to time- so I could attempt some more expressive and creative images?
It would be useful for me and beneficial to you I imagine?

Lurking around with my camera at the back of a jam packed auditorium
doesn’t make for the most rewarding of locations and as you can see,
the majority of wide shots have a sea of heads in front of them!
Actually it turned out not too bad in some respects as it shows the
layout and intimacy of this particular venue but it would be good to
provide SNC with some more regular options and angles providing a
better library of shots for your website and Press Pack etc.

If I tell you that coming to see you on Sunday was the number one choice by my wife (to celebrate her birthday and our wedding anniversary), I think you will get some idea of the impression you have made at this end!

Kind regards
Mike

You can see all the photos Mike took at the gig on his Flickr site.

We look forward to doing a photo session with Mike at a rehearsal soon.

Big Band Recording

The band did their second formal recording last week, an event we had been planning for a long while, and trying to organise with little success for many year prior.

A frantic morning’s work with a very complex setup, transforming our normal Hassocks venue into a state of the art recording studio resulted in ten tracks being recorded.

We have tried to focus on repertoire that features compositions from the band members or other original material from our close friends.  However we have included a few old favourites too!

Not currently sure what the plans are for the material, whether to produce a CD now, or just make the tracks available for download.

If you would like a sneak peak at the work this link should take you to some of the rough mixes that will be evolving over the coming weeks..   Please feel free to have a listen and let us know what you think.

A big thank you goes out to Joe Corfield, our engineer for the day, The Hassocks Hotel, for providing us with a great venue and coffee/lunch, Mark Bassey for joining the band for the day and several local studios for kindly lending us so many state of the art microphones.

Commission For New Bass Trombone Feature

Regular listeners will know that we play quite a few charts by a very inventive composer and arranger living in Sussex:  Paul Busby. His charts are some of the band’s favourites and we normally play at least one at every gig.  Recently we have been searching for a new feature for our fabulous bass trombonist Howard Beagley, and it seems really hard to find a chart that is musically demanding enough to show off this great player’s skills and that isn’t.. well… silly.  A bit of thinking around the bar in the pub (best place, i find!) put these two things together and last week we approached Paul about the band commissioning an original piece featuring Howard as bass trombonist.  Paul was delighted to have been asked and will be getting some notes on the page very soon.

Music on ReverbNation

We are now host alot of our music on a fab website called ReverbNation.   This site keeps track of our gigs but also gives us a really cool music and video player that we can use on our main website.  It also helping us run our mailing list and does other cool things like giving us a chart position locally and globally!  (we’re number 5 for jazz in the Brighton area at the moment!)

Happy listenning!

Lainston House

What a great gig, sun was shining again.  Gary and Megan sounded amazing on their first gig together.

The place was really packed out this year, and the band played some wonderful charts, mixing music from Glenn Miller with our more modern Gordon Goodwin and Nestico’s.

Lots of money raised for Naomi House i am sure, and several people enquired with us for putting on similar type gigs in the coming year.

Pictures from the event have just been uploaded to our ‘Facebook page’ HERE

Videos and some audio should be coming soon!

Don’t forget we have 2 more gigs this month, 15th 7.30pm at the Hassocks Hotel, 22nd 1pm at the Jack and Jill.

Reverbnation

I’ve been updating our music and gigs on our reverbnation site. Pay it a visit, lots of new audio posted up there for you to listen to.

Simon D’Souza: Composer in residence

Last nights Brunswick gig saw the band performing a couple of new works written and arranged our very own superstar sax player Simon D’Souza.  Not only does he perform those amazing tenor sax solos that we all love, but it also seems he isn’t all too bad when it comes to turning out a note or two on the written page!

So our intimate crowd had the pleasure of hearing the first performance of Simon’s new tune Solid Ground, a funky latin number that is really putting the band through their paces.   You can hear Solid Ground at the link below, featuring solos by Jon Brown (trumpet) and Paul Nieman (trombone), and the funkiest Baritone Sax playing from Rose Farrell

Solid Ground Audio

Not content with one masterpiece Simon has also provided us with a beautifully crafted arrangement of the Jobim classic Desafindo, also premiered last night.  This recording features Paul Nieman on trombone again along with Russ Holdsworth on tenor sax.

We are looking forward to some new arrangements from Simon very soon so keep watching this space!

Forest Row Festival omg the dancers

A great funky tune: Soul Vaccination complete with storming sax solo by Simon Da Souza, performed at the Forest Row Arts Festival earlier this year.  However SNC spies were in the audience and managed to capture some red hot dancing on the camera.

More Hove Town Hall Videos

Lainston House, what a scorcher!!

An amazing afternoon which the band really enjoyed, and from the reaction of the crowd I think they were feeling very similar.  The complete opposite weather to the previous year, where we had a view of a field of brollys staring back at us, this time the sun was really smiling down on us.  Gary was singing up to his normal high standards, and soon had a throng of lovely ladies dancing in front of him.  The picnics looked (and tasted) delicious, and the champagne and pimms were flowing all afternoon.

Jaqui was in the crowd having a “day off” but she did us a great favour by taking lots of snaps and several videos of the event, not great sound quality I am afraid, but a good reminder of a great day.  Clickety click on the links below…..

Last 3 tunes

The management at Lainston House have already asked us if we would be willing to put on another gig for them next year, so fingers crossed it will be as good, or even better than this years.
